Often called 'First Stage' formula, whey dominant formulae are the new improved version of formula which features a modified protein ratio, more closely resembling the protein ratio of breastmilk. It is thought to be less stressful on the body than the casein based milks, which were the older type of formula. Whey Based Formulae

Often now known as 'Hungry Baby' formulae, casein dominant formula are actually an old fashioned version of today's 'first stage' or whey dominant formula, from a time before the manufacturers knew enough to split the proteins in order to be able to mimic the protein ratio in breastmilk. The casein 'hungry baby' formula in fact contain no more calories or fats than the 'first stage' whey dominant type, but the proteins are harder to digest meaning that baby takes longer to work it through and so it may help to space out feeds.
