Contraception choices when breastfeeding are different from before having your baby or when formula feeding, because what you put into your body can affect your milk, or your milk production.
Forms of contraception available during lactation: Progesterone only contraceptive pill (mini pill)
Progesterone only injection after 6 weeks
Some women report lowered milk supply with Progesterone so trial of one month of oral medication before the injection is introduced is advised. Emergency Hormonal Contraception
Barrier methods eg condom, diaphragm
The combined oral contraceptive pill is contra-indicated before 3 months, and inadvisable even after that as it can seriously affect milk production.
Another thing that's different for a breastfeeding mum is that there is another option - the LAM or Lactational Amenorrhea Method.
