Ailments of the Breastfeeding Mother

Constipation - generally this means you're not drinking enough fluids to replace the fluids used up by breastfeeding your baby, so make sure everytime you sit down to feed you also grab a glass of water and drink it as you go, though it may also be that you aren't eating enough vegetables or even that you are taking an iron supplement which can have that effect too.

Headaches - this is also often linked to being dehydrated, so the first course of action should be to rehydrate yourself as much as possible. Also try to sit comfortably when feeding, so that you;re not hunching up or putting strain on neck or shoulders, which can lead to unconscious tension. Sleep deprivation

Flu-like Symptoms - this could be simply that you have unluckily caught a nasty cold or flu, but it could also be the first sign that you are coming down with Mastitus, which can be nasty. See the BfN's leaflet for more details of treatment and medications for mastitus. It is important to stress that only INFECTED mastitus needs to be trusted with antibiotics: it's more crucial that you find out what has caused it and remove the CAUSE of the mastitus, perhaps by adjusting your positioning and attachment, and so relieve inflaammation and get well soon!
